What to Wear for Senior Pictures: Outfit Ideas for Guys & Girls in Mississippi

Senior year is full of milestones, and your portrait session should be more than just snapping a few cap-and-gown pics. It’s a chance to celebrate you — your personality, your style, and the season of life you’re in.

One of the biggest questions I get as a Mississippi senior photographer is:
“What should I wear for my senior session?”
So I’ve put together this guide with go-to outfit tips, color suggestions, and a few do’s and don’ts to help you look and feel your best.

Outfit Tips for Girls

1. Bring Variety
Choose 2–3 outfits with different vibes — casual, dressy, and maybe something fun or creative. Flowy dresses, trendy jeans with cute tops, or even a jumpsuit are great options.

2. Think About Movement
Fabrics that flow and catch the breeze look amazing on camera — think maxi skirts, light blouses, or a soft duster/cardigan.

3. Stick to Solids or Subtle Patterns
Too-busy patterns can distract from your face. Earth tones, pastels, jewel tones, and classic neutrals are all flattering and timeless.

Pro tip: Avoid super bright neons and big logos. We want your personality to shine, not your shirt brand.

Outfit Tips for Guys

1. Go Classic, But Layer It Up
A well-fitted button-up shirt with jeans or chinos always works. Add a jacket or flannel for some texture. And yes — sneakers or boots can totally work!

2. Keep It Clean
Ironed clothes, trimmed facial hair, and neat shoes go a long way in helping you look polished without trying too hard.

3. Show Some Style
Whether it’s a favorite band tee or your letterman jacket, bring something that feels you. I love working those pieces into more styled shots.

What Colors Look Best in Mississippi?

With all the greenery, golden fields, and red dirt tones around here, the best colors to wear include:

✔ Earth tones: olive, rust, tan, cream
✔ Jewel tones: emerald, sapphire, maroon
✔ Neutrals: white, gray, navy, black (great for contrast!)
✔ Soft pastels in spring: blush, lavender, sky blue

I always recommend avoiding neon colors, anything with lots of logos, or items that blend too closely into your background.

Bonus Tips for Your Session:

Bring props if they feel meaningful — sports gear, instruments, or even a pet!
Bring a backup pair of shoes if we’ll be walking a bit.
Keep makeup natural and fresh — or glam it up if that’s your vibe!
Book your session during golden hour for that dreamy, flattering light.
